Innovation of Trains!

These are some of the main innovations that led to modern locomotives:
  • Wagonways were first used in the 1550′s in Germany. It was the beginning of modern railroads.
  • The invention of the steam engine was critical to the invention of the modern railroad and trains.
  • By 1789 the wooden rails were replaced by iron.
  •  In 1803 Samuel Homfray funded the development of a steam-powered vehicle.
  • Colonel John Stevens is considered the father of American Railroads.

  • In 1821 Julius Griffiths was the first passenger to road locomotive.
  • In 1828, the first Railroad was made in New York by two pioneers, Philip E. Thomas & George Brown.
  • Colonel John Steven is considered to be the father of American railroads. In 1826 Stevens demonstrated the feasibility of steam locomotion on a circular experimental track constructed on his estate in his hometown, Hoboken, New Jersey.
  • In 1830, the Tom Thumb, which is the first American-built steam locomotive was designed and built by Peter Cooper. The purpose of the Tom Thumb is to operate on a common-carrier railroad.
